La Camera Restaurant & Bar

1 out of 5

BigMouth & CB dropped into Southgate yesterday for early “elevenes” and decided to give La Camera a shot.

Located at the mid level east end of Southgate, the restaurant and cafe is well positioned to offer patron’s impressive views over the river and up towards the MCG.

The sole remaining serve of tiramisu looked sadly deflatted, disappointing considering that they claim it to be the world’s best. So for the morning sugar hit I had the lemon meringue; it tasted good, but I was slightly disappointed as the crust had a feeling of yesterday about it.

CB settled for a generous slice apple crumble cheesecake which was fresh and filling.

The setting would normally have been nice, however for some odd reason our waiter had chosen to seat us beside a “McDonalds style” keyboard used for punching through orders to the kitchen. If the restaurant had been full, this would have been forgiveable. But as there were seats aplenty in sunny positions throughout the establishment, the cramped and noisy conditions were difficult to endure. We longed to be seated by the window and watched people go by.

Understand your disappointment completely. I worked in Southbank for 6 and a half years, and whenever there was a reason to celebrate with work colleagues, the most tedious part was choosing where to eat/drink. Slim pickings indeed if you’re after something delicious and easy on the wallet. The shining star in the Southgate complex is the Earthworm Organic Cafe. Run by Joe & his crew, the service is a delight & the coffee consistently great - definitely a favourite of mine in Melbourne.

I’m still mourning the death of Rivers, a restaurant/bar at the eastern end of Southgate that used to serve great meals, excellent coffee and better cocktails. The head barman, Marco, was always smiling and had an excellent memory for names and drink of preference. (Thankfully, Marco has not been lost - he is now downstairs at Pure South.)

Tutto Bene on the same level has good food but it ain’t cheap; it does have an excellent gelati bar outside though. The food court, when it’s open, is one of the best in the city with a decent bain-marie curry outlet, a good sandwich place, pancakes and soulaki. And if you walk towards Crown, there’s a great Thai place and a good Chinese restaurant along the riverfront.

P.S. Damn that lemon meringue pie looks good. Where am I going to find a slice at 9pm on a Wednesday night?..
