Vegie delight
Moroccan Soup Bar
3 out of 5
BigMouth is always a fan of restaurants that do the thinking for you. Here the waiting staff tell you about the day’s offering - if you are lucky enough to score a table at this busy establishment. Even with no booze, menu or meat, this is one of the north’s best-loved eateries.
Squeeze into the informal room, and let your eye wander over decor’s mish-mash of furnishings; a room festooned with North African artefacts.
You’ll be told of a simple vegetarian menu and offered a glass of hot and sweetly fragrant mint tea. The food is homely, wholesome and variable. Try the banquet at around $17 for three courses.

How long did you wait to get a table, bigmouth?
My partner and I would have waited about 1 hour, but we didn’t mind. There are a few nice shops around that strip that we inspected.
I wouldn’t want to wait that long every time, though. And, they don’t let you book in advance there. That’s a downside, I reckon.

Zero minutes. We were lucky enough to walk straight in off the street on our last visit. Living nearby gives us the added advantage of being able to change plans instantly if the wait is unduly long. If the Soup Bar if full, there are other local eateries we’d frequent. (BigMouth will be listing those in coming months).

Yuk! BigMouth, what type of lentil-loving feral hippy are you?

Also in Fitzroy is the most excellent Vegie Bar. It’s on Brunswick St next to Bimbos, and has a startling selection of goodies, most of them way too large for one person.
The decor is simple - rock concert posters mostly - but the sun warms the front in the afternoon and the people (customers and staff) are the height of Fitzroy Cool. For reasons known only to the bar and Yarra Council, only half the restaurant is licensed. Weird.
I recommend: chilli tofu stirfry, nasi goreng, chocolate milkshake, and anything on their eternally changing specials board.
