Baked goodies
Bigmouth generally does all the cooking at our establishment; but with the outlaw/inlaws paying a visit last weekend, CB wanted to make an impression. So she went out to the kitchen to rattle those pots and pans.
This is largely unexplored territory to her, so it wasn’t long before the call came forth: “where are the oven trays?” My reply being: “check the oven”.
Now this was subject to great scorn be poured upon Bigmouth from all quarters: ”The oven? What an odd place to store unused oven trays? Only you would do such a thing.” But I’m sure this idea is the product of folklore handed down from generation to generation - back from an era when the best remedy to prevent rust on older-style baking trays was to have then dry in a cooling oven.
So this little domestic incident prompts today’s question: in a tight kitchen where space is a premium, do you find similar solutions for storage? Or is Bigmouth truly the odd-man-out?

I’m with you Bigmouth. The oven is exactly the place to store the trays. I am brought up in the same tradition as you, unlike my partner who can never find the trays after I’ve put away the dishes. I do draw the line though at storing tupperware in the oven, as appealing a solution as it is when I’m looking around for a not too overstuffed drawer to stow my partner’s plastic junk.

In my tiny kitchen the oven has to multi-task as a cupboard. Just like the fridge is a big cupboard that keeps things nice and cold for years. Food manufacturers must have to put refrigerate after opening as a matter of course.
My partner decided to clean out the fridge for me and throw out those jars of condiments from last century only to leave it all in a cardboard box on the floor where I tripped over it after arrviving home late after a Chirtsmas party.
Still now I have a nice empty fridge ready for the Christmas beer but my oven is full to the brim with baking trays, lasagne dishes, roasting dish, bread tin and muffin trays.

Which is fine … until you try to preheat it and discover - too late - your mistake.
My flat came with a dishwasher, which I don’t need, and a really awkward cupboard for crockery. So now I wash the dishes in the sink and put them in the dishwasher. You don’t even have to dry them and they never get dusty!
My mum is a bit of a psycho when it comes to adaptation in the kitchen. She is a stickler for things being used for their intended purpose. One afternoon when I was a child, she got sick of washing saucers that my brother and I had used as breadplates once all the breadplates were dirty. She smashed them, one by one, on the tile floor thus removing our option to use them incorrectly.
(But I still use ceramic wine goblets for coffee sometimes when all the mugs are dirty…)
